This is one of the babies from my installation ‘Confinement’. I am drawing babies for the new project, “Calico Babies’, that I am developing with Janine Collier. I am looking at these babies for inspiration, even though it seems that the calico babies are going to end up being very different babies than these.
I am giving Jill Littlewood’s book ‘Dick and Jane Visit Abu Ghraib’ as a Christmas present and this piece is posted in honor of her and her amazing work. This is ‘Confinement’, an installation I created for The Prison Project at The Little Room in Pittsburg, Kansas. It is common practice in U.S. prisons to shackle women prisoners during labor and delivery. The large figures on the left represent these mothers and are, literally, chained to the wall. The figures on the right are girl babies, floating away from their mothers.
